Pre-workout and Post-workout food confusion?

I have been doing workout for about 5 months now and did not notice any major changes in my body. 

I am confused what type of food is more appropriate before workout and after workout. Should diet have more carbohydrates before workout and more protein diet after workout?

Also, what's the thought on pre-workout shakes or carbs shakes? Is it good or bad thing?


Please help.
